Notes: Label source: Distribution: North Island. Abundant from the North Cape to Waikato, then sparingly southwards to Mahia Peninsula and Cape Egmont. A medium size tree, growing to 60 feet. the timber when seasoned is a rich dark brown. It is extremely hard,, dense, strong, durable and heavy. Owing to its interlaced fibres it is difficult to work. It has been so heavily used for railway sleepers and posts that the supply is now almost exhausted.
